Happy Chinese New Year!  I made these red bean pastries this afternoon for the first time in years.  As I was kneading the dough, I suddenly remembered why I haven’t made them in so long…because it takes forever to roll out the dough and wrap each one individually!  However, the yummy smell that permeated our little kitchen and the lucious taste of the red bean paste made it all worth it!

“Ro Geng” Soup

One of my favorite Taiwanese dish of all time is the “ro geng” soup, also known as “ba genh” in Taiwanese.  It’s made of pork strips coated with fish paste (don’t worry – it tastes better than it sounds), bamboo, mushroom, and carrots – and it’s usually eaten over a bowl of rice or noodles.   Tonight was the first time I made this dish from scratch.  From the good feedback from family and friends, it was worth all the work!

Avocado Salad

Tonight, my husband finally had his way and had the avaocado salad at Pio Pio in Jackson Heights.  Even he doesn’t know why he craves this salad more than Pio Pio’s famous chicken.  I’ve told him that I can make it for him…however, he says it’ll take too long for the avaocado to ripen.  Oh well…one less thing for me to make! =D

Cream Wafer

Tonight we had one of my favorite dishes of all time – pork chops taiwanese style!  Actually, it was probably more “Anny” style than anything else: a little bit of soy sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, sugar, garlic, pepper and five spice powder.  My husband says that he can smell the aroma of the pork chop cooking as he looks at this picture. Well, thanks for the compliment, Hon!
